EDITOR'S NOTE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Exciting news in this issue on a couple of fronts. First, Debra Maier sent an announcement of the creation of the Frederick M. Loop Scholarship Fund at Cornell University. Frederick M. Loop was, of course, Debra's father. The Scholarship will go to descendants of any Loop/Lupp/Leupp family in the United States. If no one meets that criteria the award will be available for any resident of Erie County, Pennsylvania, then to any applicant with dyslexia and then to any applicant with general need. Debra writes, "My father believed strongly both in education and in supporting the family. Besides putting four children through college he also helped several nephews. This scholarship will reflect those two important beliefs he held. It is a stipend awarded yearly. I hope it will not be too long before we hear of some Loop using it." Secondly, on the family research front, I finally obtained the Bad Marienberg, Germany, parish registers from the Mormons. The picture is much clearer now. I am certain now that Jacob Lupp of Langenbach was the father of Christian Loop, Martin Loop and Sebastian Loop of Columbia County New York. And I believe I have found Capt. Peter Loop's birth record. But I will have to convince you. See details inside. (c) Victor L. Bennison, 1987 ****************************** ARTICLE ********************************* The Family of Jacob Lupp of Langenbach Victor L. Bennison Although I am not through searching the parish registers of the Parish of Bad Marienberg, in the Hesse-Nassau region of Germany not far from the Rhine, I want to report on some of my findings. There were a number of Lupp families in the small towns of the parish, and they all seem to be closely related. Two families are of particular interest to us, because we believe they had members who left and came to the United States. First is the family of Johan Jacob Lupp of Langenbach, who was a son of Sebastion Lupp of Pfuhl. Jacob had many children, by two wives. His first wife was Anna Elisabeth Ross, daughter of Claus Ross of Langenbach. Probably Jacob moved from Pfuhl to Langenbach when he married her. Johan Christian Lupp (the father of Capt. Peter Loop) was their son and was probably their first child born in 1695. They had another son, Johan Peter, born probably in 1699, who married Anna Veronica Horngel. All the rest of their 9 or 10 children were girls. Several of the children died young. Johan Jacob Lupp's first wife died in 1716, likey of complications from the birth or their daughter Anna Gertrude. In 1717 he married again, to Anna Catherina Schmid the daughter of Christian Schmid. A son of this Christian Schmid later married one of Jacob's daughters. Jacob and Anna Catherina had at least four children including Martin Lupp, born 1723, and Sebastian Lupp, born 1728, who are the brothers Martin and Sebastian who married the Minkler sisters in Columbia County, New York. [Note that Martin and Sebastian's parents were Jacob and Catherine, that Maria and Margaret Minkler's parents were Josiah and Gertrude. Then note that Martin's first three children were named Jacob, Gertrude, and Catherine. And that Sebastian's first five children were named Josiah, Jacob, Elisabeth, Jacob, and Gertrude.] Jacob Lupp's second wife Anna Catherina also gave birth, in 1717, to an Anna Elisabeth Lupp, who is probably the Anna Elisabeth who married Martin Cooper and who was in New York City in 1737 with Anna Maria (Filger) Loop. I have not been able to find a marriage record for Martin Cooper and Anna Elisabeth Lupp in the Marienberg parish registers. But we know from records gathered by Hank Jones (and sent to us by George Capes) that there were Cooper's (spelled Kupfer) in the adjoining Emmerichenhain parish, including a Johann Martin Kupfer, possibly the father of Martin Cooper. But more importantly, in the Marienberg parish registers are found many records for Filger's. You will remember that Christian Loop married Anna Maria Vilger (or Fillier, or Philyer). I have not found their marriage record yet, but the Filger's are sponsers at christenings for several Lupp children, and so are closely tied to the Lupp family. I have found several christenings for the children of this Johan Christian Lupp and Anna Maria his wife. The earliest is for a Catherine Lupp born in 1728. The next is for Johan Peter Lupp, born December 12, 1732. This, I believe, is Capt. Peter Loop. I know we have been told that Capt. Peter Loop was born is 1723, not 1732. But it is not hard to imagine how that numeral switch could be made, either on purpose or by mistake. And I always thought it unusual that Peter would have his first child at age 36 and his last at age 60. It would become 27 and 51 if he were born in 1732. And is it more likely he was appointed as a Captain in the Revolution at age 58 or age 49? And did he die at age 101 or age 92? Of course, none of the higher dates is impossible. But taking everything together I am convinced that Capt. Peter was born in 1732. The cincher would be to find the marriage record for Christian Lupp and Anna Maria Filger. Where is it? I have a theory. Records provided by Helmut Teibach show a Johan Jacob Lupp from Langenbach arriving in East Prussia in 1724. I have found no evidence that there was ever another Johan Jacob Lupp in Langenbach. If Jacob went to East Prussia, he returned sometime before the birth of his son Sebastian in Langenbach in 1728. Perhaps his son Christian went with him to East Prussia and married Anna Maria Filger while there. I don't know if any Filger families went to East Prussia, but apparently many families from the Bad Marienberg area did go at that time, some remaining and some returning after a few years. I have found no Lupp christenings, marriages, or deaths in Langenbach for the years 1724 to 1728. I think they were in East Prussia during those years. Similarly, records for Lupp's in Langenbach cease in 1737, the year we find Christian Lupp's wife in New York City at a christening for a child born at sea. The one exception I've found so far is the marriage of one of Jacob Lupp's daughters in 1742. But it is quite possible that Jacob's widow and some of his children remained behind. By 1750, the once pervasive Lupp's have become sparse in the parish of Bad Marienberg. Most of them have moved, some to East Prussia, some to the New World, and perhaps some to other parts of Europe. In Columbia County, New York, Martin Loop's bible records say that "mother" died in 1750. This could be his mother Anna Catherina who died, or it could possibly be his wife Anna Maria Minkler's mother. In the revised family group sheet for Jacob Lupp that I have included in this issue I have transcribed some of the Lupp records I have found in the Bad Marienberg parish registers. The records are handwritten (scrawled in some cases) in old German fractur script. Though I don't read German, I am getting better and better at deciphering the records. In the transcriptions, a question mark in brackets [?] means I'm not sure of the preceding word's translation. Question marks not in brackets mean a word or words are left out because I could not translate them. Comments in brackets are my comments and not part of the records. A capital "B" in the middle of a work stands for the German "ss" which has no English equivalent. For example, "ClaB" is Class or Claus. The second family of interest in the Bad Marienberg parish is the family of Johan Heinrich Lupp of Marienberg, schoolmaster and the father of Ludwig Lupp, the reformed pastor of Pennsylvania. I have found several christenings for the children of this Johan Heinrich Lupp, the schoolmaster in Bad Marienberg, including the christening for Ludwig. He was born in Bad Marienberg in 1733. I'll continue researching this family and report my findings in the next Loop Scoop. Finally, there are some possible clues to the origin of Gerlach Lupp of New Jersey contained in the parish register. There are records for several different Gerlach Lupp's found in the registers. My top candidate so far is the Gerlach Lupp of Erbach who married Anna Weber in 1724. A sponsor at the birth of their daughter Anna Maria is Jacob Kemper (possibly Kempel). In New Jersey, Gerlach's son Christian names Philip Kempel as co-executor to his will, along with his wife and his brother Peter Lupp. I'll continue searching the registers for more clues on this or other Gerlachs. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ VITAL DATA +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ 1870 Census of Cherokee County, Kansas, Sheridan Twp: [Grandchildren of George Loop born Westmoreland County, PA. Henry H. Loop was born in New York between 1827 and 1836. He does not show up in Chautauqua County until the 1855 census of that county. There he is listed as the adopted son of Nicolas Thum and his county of birth is listed as unknown. He married Luana Marsh and lived in Chautauqua County until his death in 1911. On his death certificate his father is listed as John Loop. No mother is listed. Questions: Where was he born? Who were his parents? - Vick Bennison 2. Family info indicates father of Peter H. Loop b. 1766/7 d. 1855 Sandusky Co., OH, was Peter Loop Sr. b. 1743 Schoharie, NY, d. 1843 Woodstock, IL. Other info places Peter H. as the son of Ensign Henry Loop. Has anyone found records of a Schoharie NY Peter Loop, of a Peter Loop dying or buried at Woodstock (McHenry County) IL, or a marriage record of Ensign Henry's son Peter? My Peter Loop married Rebecca Gilbert, supposedly in 1790 at Schoharie, NY, and his tombstone has Peter Loop, JR. 1766 - 1855. - Joanne Ellis 3. I am seeking the parents of Jane Loop who married Jonathan Andrus (Andrews) of New York. Their child, Polly Andrews, born 3 APR 1791, died 17 DEC 1872 at Windsor, NY, she having married Ezra Barton on 28 NOV 1808 in Broome County, NY. Is there proof that she is the daughter of Peter Loop and Couysa Springer? - Dee Merritt 4. Who were the parents of Almond Loop, where and when were they born? Did he have any brothers and sisters? Almond was born 27 FEB 1828, in New York State, where? He was married in Bradford, Penn., to Mary Melissa Moore, 22 JAN 1850. They lived in Penn., until 1865 when they moved to Manchester, Iowa. He died 27 JUN 1912. I would like to know the parents of Mary Moore, where and when they were born. Mary was born in Jamestown, New York, 6 JAN 1836 and died 23 OCT 1901 in Iowa. - Vola Carter 5. Need date and place of marriage of John L. Loop and Mrs. Naomi Barlow (?), his 2nd wife. They were married about 1856/57 in Wisconsin. Need maiden name, date/place of birth, date/place of death of Naomi Loop, wife of John L. Loop. Need date/place of birth, date/place of death of Ezra Loop, son of John L. and Naomi Loop. Ezra must have died between 1870 and 1880, probably in Richardson County, Nebraska. - Virginia L. Bachofer 6. [From the New York Biographical and Genealogical Record:] LOUP - WILSON. Parents and family of Mary Lane Loup, born about 1826, who married Robert B. Wilson of Bradford, [McKean County], Pennsylvania, about 1847, moved to Illinois 1858-1860, thence to Jessup, Iowa. - Mrs. R. J. Malone [I wrote to Mrs. Malone. She said the name is Mary Lane Loup, not Mary Jane Loup. I think she must be a descendant of Richard Henry. Robert B. Wilson and Mary Lane Loup had six children, including twins Ellis and Alice Wilson born 1849 in Bradford, PA, and a son Franklin Wilson born there also in 1859. I can't tie her in yet, can anyone else?] +++++++++++++++++++++++ NOTES AND ANNOUNCEMENTS +++++++++++++++++++++++ 1. Melba Wickes writes to inform me of a mistake in the family group sheet for Amos Loop. His daughter Ann D. Loop married James Whitman, not Kimball. If you read the source, you will understand why I made the mistake. And it further proves my belief that whenever you list a name in a genealogy you should list the full name, including the last name, even if it seems repetitious. 2. I should soon be receiving photographs from a Mr. James Fry to copy for the newsletter. The photos are from the North East, PA, Loops, including Dennis D. Loop and, presumably, Sena (Spencer) Loop. It is possible I will get them in time to include in this issue. 3. Information from James Fry, who apparently descends from a sister of Charles Loop of Meadville, PA, has allowed me to make inroads into the family of this Charles Loop, the son of Martin Loop and grandson of Captain Peter. Mr. Fry has a professional genealogist working on that Loop line, so more information may be forthcoming. He has asked the genealogist to send me copies of his reports. 4. George Capes - note that the parish records for Jacob Lupp seem to prove that Catherine Lupp who married Barent Denny was not the daughter of Jacob Lupp. What I don't understand is how Jacob has a daughter Anna Catherina born in 1714, another Anna Catherina born in 1720 (which would usually imply the first one died, though I can't find a death record for her), a "young daughter" Anna Catherina who dies in 1737, and then a daughter Anna Catherina marrying in 1742. There is no evidence that there were two Jacob Lupp's in Langenbach. It's possible that your Catherine is the daughter of Christian Lupp and Anna Maria Filger born in 1828, but she would then have been a month short of 17 when her son Nicholas was born; not impossible, but approaching unlikely. Also, there is a Catherine Lupp at the christening in Germantown, NY, of Christian Lupp and Anna Maria Vilger's son Martin. This would probably, though not necessarily, be the Catherine who married Barent Denny. But would Catherine have served, at age 13, as a sponsor at her brother's christening. Doesn't seem too likely. The sponsor could be Jacob's widow Catherine, but did grandparents serve as godparents? I don't know.
